The Bible and Self-Esteem
Back in November, I had the first nude photo of myself taken. At 21, and as someone who has had smartphones and romantic partners to send such images to for your years, I realize that my lack of body positivity was probably to blame for something of a delayed start in loving my nude form. Previously, I had felt pretty insecure about my nakedness , which manifested in difficulty having sex without covering up multiple parts of myself up. Going through sexual trauma only exacerbated my relationship with my sexual body even further, as I continued to make efforts to cover myself up even more, and sometimes making efforts not to touch myself at all.

My painting professor likes to tell our class that when she first started learning to make art, it was like someone had taken a blindfold off her eyes. That is, until my focus was no longer an object or still life, but rather a living person. It has become a societal standard, especially for women, to fixate on the parts of ourselves we wish we could change, for our eyes to be automatically drawn to the extra fat on our thighs or the curvature of our stomachs.
How do we develop a positive body image and self-concept? On the one hand, self-worth measures how we feel about our unchangeable essence--important, essential aspects of ourselves. On the other, self-image is more about how we see ourselves in important, but NON-essential aspects of ourselves. The self-image is a collection of sensory images, beliefs, thoughts, and attached feelings we have about ourselves. It includes both the ideal self-image and the perceived self-image.
